CHAPTER SIXTEEN

She should be frightened. Someone had shot at them, for fuck's sake. That was the very best reason for her to be scared shitless while curled up on the forest floor beneath a tree. Instead, she couldn't shake the feeling of Liam's body touching hers.

And not just a little touching either. Oh, hell no. They had been connected in every way, from shin to shoulder, as he covered her body with his own. He literally protected her with his own body.

Not to mention the way he had rolled her to safety. Everything about the situation was sexy. And that was the last thing that should be on her mind right now.

Addison moved farther into her hiding spot and tried to listen to the noises around her. She had been so focused on trying to eavesdrop on Liam's phone conversation that she hadn't realized they were in danger until Liam was throwing her to the ground and the sound of a gunfire exploded around her. Any illusion she had that they were safe walking through the woods had shattered quickly. That pissed her off more than she cared to admit.

A week ago, her life had been quiet. Boring, but quiet. The most she had to worry about was where she was ordering takeout from because cooking for one got old. Eating the same thing for two or three days straight because she hated wasting leftovers also got old. In fact, now that she had time to actually think about it, everything about her old life was getting old. A change had been needed. She just wished it hadn't taken a plane crash and getting shot at to realize it.

Was it weird that she couldn't hear anything besides the steady rhythm of her own heartbeat? The forest was quiet. Other than the first gunshot, oh no wait, there had been two. A second shot had been fired while they were rolling. Other than that, she had yet to hear another peep. She didn't know if that was good or bad. Shouldn't she have heard something by now?

Panic was starting to set in. Not for her safety, but for Liam's. Okay, and maybe for herself as well. She was such an idiot. Liam had left with the bag still on his back. She had no phone. No way to communicate with the outside world. Hell, other than the clothes on her back, she had nothing to her name and no way to get in touch with Liam's team. She didn't even know her own father's phone number.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

How was it possible that she forgot every survival instinct she learned from all those serial killer documentaries? She might as well have been the dumb heroine who walked into the basement despite knowing that's where the killer was hiding.

Addison was still berating herself when a noise behind her caught her attention. She stopped everything. Every thought shut up. Every muscle locked up. She held her breath in hopes that the simple movement wouldn’t give away her location.
